What You Hear Before the Bird

Low ceilings, hard floors and early reflections shape sound before it reaches you. The same method applies to a bush walk: name the noise, then the call.

A small room and open bushland deliver two different versions of the same sound. In a room, a low ceiling and a hard floor send early reflections back to your ears within milliseconds of the direct sound, so the room adds its own version before you hear the source. In bushland there is usually no ceiling and no hard floor, so what reaches you is mostly the direct sound plus whatever the wind, traffic, cicadas and water are doing at that moment.

Why does a small room sound different from open bushland?

A room is a set of surfaces. A low ceiling puts a reflective plane close above the source, and a hard floor puts another one close below. Sound leaves the instrument, hits those planes, and arrives at your ears a few milliseconds after the direct sound. That gap is short enough that the ear fuses it with the original, but long enough to change the tone. Engineers call these early reflections. They add a comb of peaks and dips across the frequency range, and the pattern depends on where you sit, where the instrument sits, and how high the ceiling is.

Reverberation is the later part: the tail of many reflections arriving after the early ones. A low room usually has a short tail, because the ceiling and floor are close and the walls are not far apart. That can be good for detail. It can also be bad, because the early reflections are strong and arrive fast, and they smear the attack of a plucked string or a struck key.

Open bushland works differently. There is no ceiling, so there is no close overhead reflection. The ground may be leaf litter, sand or grass, all of which absorb more than a hard floor. The result is a drier sound with less of the room's signature, but also less support. A call that fills a small room can vanish in open air, and a call that sounds thin indoors can carry a long way across a gully.

This is the same problem a small listening room poses from the other side of the microphone. A performer working with reduced instrumentation, a melodica or a single voice, has to hear detail without amplification, and the room either helps or fights that. The small-room listening notes published in Reykjavik deal with exactly this: a low room, a small setup, and an audience close enough that every reflection matters. The method transfers. Before you judge a sound, judge the space it travelled through.

What should you listen to before you name a bird call?

Name the noise first. Wind, traffic, cicadas and water are not interference to be filtered out. They are the conditions that decide which frequencies survive the trip to your ears. A steady wind in the canopy masks high frequencies and leaves low ones. Road traffic half a kilometre away puts a broadband hum under everything. Cicadas, when they are loud, occupy a band that overlaps many bird calls. Water, a creek or a small fall, adds a continuous wash that can hide short, quiet notes.

Write those four down before you write a bird. Wind direction and strength. Traffic, near or far, and from which road. Cicadas, present or absent, and how loud. Water, moving or still, and how close. Then note the date and the place. A call heard on 14 March at a creek crossing is a different record from the same call heard on 2 August on a ridge, and the difference may be the bird, the season, or simply the background.

Only after that do you name the call. If you cannot place it, treat it as an open record. Write what you heard, the time, the place, the conditions, and leave the identification blank. An open record is more useful than a wrong name, because someone else can return to the same spot under the same conditions and check.

How do you inventory the background noise on a walk?

An inventory is a list, made in the field, not from memory. Stand still for two minutes at the start of the walk and again at each stop. Listen in layers.

First layer: continuous sound. Wind, traffic, water, machinery. Note whether it is steady or pulsing, and roughly where it comes from.

Second layer: intermittent sound. Cicadas that start and stop, a dog, a plane, a gate. Note the interval, even roughly.

Third layer: the sound you came for. Bird calls, wing beats, leaf movement caused by animals.

A small notebook or a phone note is enough. Record the time, the place, and the three layers. If you use a recorder, keep the microphone still and note the wind direction, because a moving mic changes the noise floor and makes the record hard to compare with anyone else's.

The point is not to eliminate noise. The point is to know what was there, so that a call you heard can be placed against a known background. Two observers at the same spot with the same inventory can compare notes. Two observers without one are comparing two different worlds.

Why a room that suits one instrument does not suit another

Every instrument has a frequency range and a decay behaviour. A melodica, with its free reeds, produces a steady tone with a fast attack and a short natural decay. A low room with strong early reflections can thicken that tone, but it can also blur the attack, because the reflection arrives close behind the direct sound. A voice, by contrast, has formants and a wider dynamic range, and it may benefit from a slightly longer tail.

A room tuned for one will not be tuned for the other. The same is true in the bush. A low, closed call from a ground bird behaves differently in a dense understorey than a high, thin call from a canopy bird. The understorey absorbs high frequencies and reflects low ones. The canopy does the opposite, scattering high frequencies and letting low ones pass. A call that is clear on an open ridge may be unrecognisable two hundred metres into scrub.

This is why the conditions come first and the identification comes second. The room, or the vegetation, is part of the instrument. Change the room and you change the sound before it reaches you.

What to write down, and what to leave open

A useful field record has five parts: date, place, conditions, the sound heard, and the identification, if any. The conditions are the four named above, plus the habitat: open ridge, dense scrub, creek line, roadside. The sound heard is described in plain words, not in a name. Low whistle, repeated three times, rising at the end. A harsh chatter from the canopy, two seconds, then silence.

The identification is the last line, and it is allowed to be empty. A record with an empty identification is still a record. A record with a confident wrong name is a liability, because it enters the count and stays there.

If you return to the same place in a different season, the inventory will change. Cicadas will be gone, water may be lower, wind may come from another direction. The call may be the same bird under different conditions, or a different bird under the same conditions. Only the written record can tell you which.

The method, in one line

Name the room, name the noise, name the date and place, then name the sound. If the last one will not come, leave it open and write down everything else. That is how a small room and a bush walk are the same problem, and how a listener on a park path can work the way a performer in a low room works: by hearing the conditions first, and the source second.
