What Last Season's Rain Did to the Birds

Why bird numbers boom after wet seasons and crash in dry ones: rain builds cover, cover builds broods, and a roadside count measures change.

You see small birds everywhere one spring and almost none the next, along the same track at the same hour, and you want to know what changed. The short answer is rain, but not last week's rain. The rain that fell two or three seasons back built the grass, the seed, the insect pulse and the nesting cover that decided how many broods survived. This guide explains that chain, shows what a roadside count can and cannot tell you, and gives you a way to read a quiet year without guessing.

Why do bird numbers boom one year and crash the next?

Birds respond to cover before anything else. A wet season grows grass tall enough to hide a nest, sets seed that feeds adults through the lean months, and pulls insects up in numbers that can carry a brood. A dry run strips each of those layers. Nests sit exposed, adults range farther for food, and many pairs never attempt to breed at all. The crash you notice is rarely a die-off: it is mostly a year of young birds that were never hatched.

The chain runs the same way in other dry-country bird systems. The Brush and the Bay, an American field almanac, tracks rain, cover and quail numbers in its After the Rains section, following the cycle among bobwhites in the south Texas brush country without printing counts of its own: each page names the public publication that carries the figures. The detail worth borrowing is the order of events. Rain builds the cover, the cover builds the broods, and the birds you count this year were decided by weather you may not remember.

For South Coast birds the trigger is the same even when the species differ. Seed-eaters answer first because grass seed follows rain within weeks. Insect-eaters follow the pulse of beetles, caterpillars and moths that fresh growth produces. Predators such as kestrels and butcherbirds lag one more step behind, because they respond to the numbers of smaller animals rather than to the rain itself.

How far back does this season's weather reach?

Farther than most visitors expect. Soil moisture refilled in a wet autumn still feeds root growth the following spring. Seed set in one summer can carry a grass population through two lean ones. A single good breeding year lifts numbers for as long as those birds live, which for a small passerine may be three to five years. When you count birds this season, you are partly counting the weather of several seasons ago.

You can check the rainfall side of that story yourself. The Bureau of Meteorology's annual climate statement publishes rainfall maps and decile rankings for each year, so you can look back at the seasons that built the cover before you walk. Two or three statements give you a fair picture of whether the birds you meet are living through a build-up, a peak or a decline.

What does a roadside count actually measure?

A roadside count measures the birds a person can see or hear from a fixed route at fixed stops, usually within a set time at each stop. It is an index, not a census. The same route run the same way in different years tells you the direction of change: more calling males, fewer calling males, or about the same. It cannot tell you how many birds live beyond sight of the road, and it was never designed to.

That limit matters in dry years. When cover thins out, many birds retreat to creek lines and remnant patches that a road route may not touch. A quiet count can overstate the crash because the birds moved rather than died. In a boom year the reverse applies: birds spread through new cover and the same route suddenly records them everywhere. Read the count as a signal about the route, not a verdict on the whole district.

Your own walks work the same way. A regular track through coastal bushland habitats gives you a personal index if you repeat it across seasons and write down what you heard at the same points each time. One walk proves nothing; a notebook of walks shows the swing.

Where can you watch the cycle on the South Coast?

Farmland edges and open grass are where the swing shows first. Stubble quail are the local birds closest to the Texas bobwhites of the almanac: they nest on the ground in grass and their numbers jump in the seasons after good rain, then scatter back into cover when the country dries out. You rarely see them; you hear the three-note call at dawn or flush one from your feet on a grassy verge.

Honeyeaters follow the cycle by a different route. Rain pushes eucalypts and banksias into flower months later, and birds such as New Holland honeyeaters and wattlebirds gather where the blossom is. How should you record a boom or a bust year?

Keep it simple and repeatable. Pick one route you can walk in under an hour, stop at the same points, and write down what you see and hear at each one. Note the habitat shape and the recent weather, not just the species list. When a familiar spot goes quiet, check the rainfall record before you read anything darker into the silence, and give nesting cover a wide berth while you watch: the safe distance rules apply even harder in a breeding season.

Over a few years the pattern becomes yours to read. Boom years fill the tracks with young birds and new voices. Bust years pull the same birds back to creeks and shelter. Neither is a surprise once you accept that the birds were decided by rain that fell long before you looked up.
